    Description

We sell a LOT of thumbnail sized specimens that are packaged in 1.25 inch square clear plastic hinged display boxes (these boxes have a 1.25 x 1.25 x 1 inch clear plastic top hinged upon a 1.25 x 1.25 x 0.25 inch black plastic base with a 1.25 x 1.25 x 0.25 inch white styrofoam base inserted into the black portion of the case), and affectionately known as "thumbnail" or "Perky" boxes.  I can't count the number of times every year when folks ask us "hey, where can I get some of those display cases or "Perky Boxes" for smaller specimens".  I probably get nearly as many questions about "why is a Perky Box called a Perky Box", as the question "where can I get some of these"!   I'll answer this question later in the description for those who want to read on........
So, after uncounted questions about how our customers could acquire some of these little mineral display gems, we have finally decided to start offering them up in  groups for those of you who are out there looking for them.  There are a few plastics companies that supply these, but unless you are willing to purchase them in lots of 2,000 or more, the price is pretty steep.  We typically buy 3,000 to 5,000 at a time, so we get a pretty significant discount on them and are now going to start making that discount available to our customers.  So before we moved in this direction, I did do some extensive research, and discovered that I can offer these in lots of 28 at about 25 cents cheaper per box than anyone else selling them on EBay (.00 less per 28 piece group).
    So
    we are offering groups of
    28 of these famous
    "
    P
erky Boxes" for .99, or about {{detail_product_description}}.93 (93 cents) per bo
x, and this includes the internal
    white Styrofoam
    mounting plate.
If you want a different quantity, or only need the
    s
    tyrofoam
inserts, just let us know as we can be flexible on the num
    bers
    .
Shipping on this item is based upon the actual weight and cost of shipping depending upon the ship-to locality and buyers choice of shipping methods.  A group of 28 of these boxes will be shipped in a 9 x 7 x 5 inch box with a total weight of about 20 ounces.  Groups of multiples of 28 should be cheaper to ship.  PayPal is our preferred method of payment, but we do accept most other common payment options, so you if have a question about our payment policy, just drop us a note.
The answer to the question about how these display cases became known as "Perky's" is that the name for the "Perky Box", the original name for thumbnail boxes in the mineral collecting world, came from the inventor Willard Perkin, and here, as Paul Harvey used to say, is the Rest of the Story:
Willard Joseph "Perky" Perkin was born in Upland, San Bernardino County, California on April 3, 1907. He became interested in minerals during the mid-1930's while he was operating a dry cleaning business next door to a gift shop which sold items made with natural mineral crystals. The proprietor of the gift shop took Perkin along on a field trip to collect specimens, and other field trips soon followed.  Before long he was hooked. He joined the Mineralogical Society of Southern California where he made many friends among the other collectors, including an early mineral dealer and desert rat known as "Chuckawalla Slim."  He also began trading specimens with Anton Berger, a well-known Austrian mineral dealer, eventually becoming Berger's West Coast USA representative, and turning into a part-time mineral dealer himself.
Perkin became a regular field collector at famous mineral localities throughout southern California, including world famous San Benito County benitoite locality.  Perkin was one of the first dealers to specialize in thumbnail-size specimens, and he had a talent for aesthetically trimming and mounting them.  He built a fine personal mineral collection of high-quality cabinet-size and smaller specimens which he placed in drawers and on glass shelves in big glass-fronted display cases lining the walls of a small garage in his Burbank home. He also developed a strong interest in micromounting.
Between 1956 and 1959 he worked for mineral dealer George Burnham ("Burminco") in Monrovia, California.  While working in Burnham's shop, Perkin was shown a small, cubical, black plastic box by a traveling salesman.  It inspired the invention of what became known as the "perky box", a 1.25-inch square clear plastic box for thumbnail specimens, which Perkin had manufactured and which he began selling to other collectors. When the number of orders coming in became overwhelming he sold the box business to someone else, but the name "Perky Box" stuck.  So now you know the "rest of the story" about how this wonderful display box became known as the "Perky Box" in the mineral collecting world.
