3.9" Septarian geode end from from southern Utah, about 15 miles from Zion National Park.  This is also known as Dragon Stone.  These Septarian crystals were formed sometime during the Cretaceous Period, between 144 to 65 million years ago.  During this period of time what is now known as the Gulf of Mexico extended into present day Utah, forming a vast interior sea.  Decomposing sea life had an attraction for the surrounding sediment, forming mud balls under the sea.  Tide and wave action rolled these balls around, creating sedimentary balls of a larger size.  As the ocean receded, the balls were left to dry and crack, allowing Calcite crystals to form within them.  A thin wall of Calcite transformed into Aragonite, dividing the shale exteriors from the Calcite crystals.  The name Septarian is derived from these dividing walls (septum in Latin.)  The geode was then cut on the end and polished to produce this piece.  Piece weighs over 3/4 lb.  A great geode for display, collection and study.
