Description
An Antique Triple Plate Silver Coffee Pot, which was likely made during 1886-1887, by the Meriden Britannia Company. This finely detailed pot has a hand-chased design of Peacocks, branches, ferns, leaves, etc. This item has a monogrammed “B” in a shield on one face of the coffee pot. This measures Approximately 14 1/2" tall, 9 1/2" wide.
Condition: Coffee Pot: No dents, apparent dents, although there is some indentation out which appears to be a deliberate part of the design. Some scratches on bottom, which you wouldn’t see unless you were looking at bottom.
This beautiful piece is identified with the hallmark Meriden B. Company, scales in a semicircle containing Meriden B. Company, 1935. The number designation (1935 which is the production number/pattern number/order number) is indicative of Triple Plated Silver on White Metal (a Pewter like formulation) or on Nickel. The 6 likely indicates that this is a sixth printing or revision of this item.
This is a highly collectible piece but it can still be used functionally.
The Meriden Britannia Company was formed in 1852 in Meriden, CT. The Rogers Bros firm was purchased by Meriden Britannia in 1862, by acquiring the 1847 Rogers Bros line. In 1878, they had a store at Union Square in New York City and a manufacturing facility in West Meriden, CT. According to their 1878 catalogue, the company won a first place medal at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the "large variety of silver plated white metal hollow ware, of excellent quality and finish, and of tasteful designs." They were one of the original companies that joined together to form the International Silver Co. in 1898.
