Contributor to the Sport, Influence on the Sport
Few people have had more of an impact upon our sport of archery in the modern era than Jim Easton. From his youth, Jim has been an archer, and since 1960 has been directly affiliated with our industry with the family business, then known as James D. Easton, Inc., located in Van Nuys, California.
Jim's influence on sport and recreation goes far beyond our arena of recreational archery and bowhunting. Not only has he diversified his aluminum company into many other sports such as skiing, golf, softball and baseball bats, tenting, tennis, hockey, and cycling, but he has also risen to a position of prominence throughout the world on the Olympic competition stage.
From 1980 to 1984 Jim served as the Olympic Commissioner of Archery on the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee, and then mayor of the Olympic Athletes Village at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. In 1989 he was elected President of FITA, our international governing body for archery, and re-elected to that position in 1993 for another term.
His contributions to the international archery scene have been many: he organized the 1983 World Archery Championships in Long Beach, California, was Development and Technical Assistance Committee Chairman (FITA), and he also helped develop the New Olympic Round for Olympic Archery in cooperation with the Barcelona RTO and NBC Sports and ESPN. Easton developed and supports three archery ranges in the Los Angeles area through the Easton Sports Development Foundation, and devotes special attention to physically challenged youth, who are taught how to shoot a bow and arrow. He has also donated the funds to build the largest archery training range in North America, the Easton Archery Complex, which is part of the U.S. Olympic Training Center in San Diego, California.
