    Description

Very rare and wonderful, original 1872 United States Patent Office Model being a finely crafted, diminutive model of an American Industrial Era Washing Machine. This fantastic, hand made Mechanical Washing Machine measures approx. 3 3/4" tall and 3” wide. It is an exact representation of an improved Washing Machine that was patented in 1872 and is made entirely of wood with brass hardware.
Offered here is the original Patent Model of this outstanding Washing Machine – it fits in the palm of your hand and is among THE most charming and fascinating Patent Models that we have encountered over the past 41+ years.
The design features a hinged tub that opens to reveal and inner tub made of wooden slats. This inner tub is also hinged and opens to allow the clothes to be cleaned to be placed inside. The lower section of the outer tub would be filled with water and once both tubs were latched closed, the inner tub could be rotated causing the clothes inside to be gently washed without physical agitation by simply rising up out of the water and falling back down into the water.
See the scans below and the Patent drawings for a glimpse at the structure and function of this fantastic Washing Machine. The lid of the outer tub has a very neat, ink inscription that reads “Ashworth & VanVoorhis” - the names of the inventors of this ingeniously designed Washing Machine.
This finely crafted Patent Model of this wonderful Washing Machine that is offered here was actually the original Patent Model - submitted to the US Patent Office by the inventors Granville H. Ashworth and Abraham F. Van Voorhis of Arcola, Illinois. It came to us with the original Patent Office Tag, a tiny remnant of the original Submission Tag, an O. Rundel Gilbert, Patent Model Collection Tag and a modern copy of the original Patent Document dated June 4, 1872. The invention was issued Patent Number 127,545. This wonderful, hand made Patent Model was submitted to the U. S. Patent Office as part of the patent process prescribed by law.
This simply fantastic and finely crafted Model of a Mechanical Washing Machine is 100% original and has not been restored, repaired or altered in any way. Overall the Machine is in very good condition - sound, intact and near complete lacking only the four simple, slat wood legs. The tub and mechanism are complete and exceptionally well preserved – complete and in excellent working condition. All of the surface finishes are original. Overall this outstanding and finely crafted Patent Model is very attractive and displays beautifully.
This wonderful, 1872 Patent Model is 100% guaranteed to be the original Model that was submitted to the United States Patent Office as part of the Patent Application process. We have included a modern copy of the original Patent Papers as further documentation of this simply fantastic Patent Model.

    Important Notes about Shipping Charges:
The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by eBay and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a .00 "packing fee" - the .00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the .00 fee. Please contact us if there are any issues regarding the cost of shipping.
