Stunning Early 1800s English Sheffield Silverplate Hot Water Urn Samovar
Presented is a wonderful quality Sheffield silverplate hot water urn or samovar,
dating to the first quarter of the 1800s. The urn is made in a handsome,
classical form, with kantharos urn style handles and a squared pedestal style
base on four ball form feet. The handles feature acanthus leaf decoration where
they meet the body, with a foliate finial on the lid and little laurel and wheat
type decorations along the sides of the spout. The finial of the spigot is
beautifully hand carved in a shell or palmette shape. Interestingly, the lid of
the interior cylindrical compartment is still present as well as a length of pig
iron, which would be heated and then placed in the compartment to keep the water
hot. The urn has a capacity of about 5 cups, or 40 fluid ounces/1.18 liters.
This piece is in great overall condition. There is only the most minor of
wear through the silver plating, chiefly around the rim and lid, on the
highpoints of the decoration, the handles, basically where you would expect.
There are no leaks, no dents, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no
repairs. The carved finial of the spigot is intact with no chips.
This piece stands about 14 1/8 inches tall and measures about 6 1/2 inches
from handle to handle, or about 7 1/2 inches from the back of the urn to the
front of the spout.
This piece weighs 2.04 kilograms or 4.5 pounds.
