Two Bone China Sugar bowls by Royal Chelsea & Royal Albert;
Up for sale are the two fine bone china open sugar bowls made in England by Royal Chelsea and Royal Albert, respectively, dated likely around mid-20
th
century.
The golden rose sugar bowl made by Royal Chelsea has a wider rim and is painted at both the interior and exterior with roses. A hallmark with an anchor is shown at the bottom. Royal Chelsea, belonging to the New Chelsea business, was a trade name especially used on tea ware from circa 1943 for the North American market. The business was established by brothers R. H. & S. L. Plant in about 1900, and operated until it was sold in
1951.
The sugar bowl made by Royal Albert has a gold scalloped edge. It exterior is painted all around with roses and other flowers in trifocals-symmetry. The bottom is back-stamped with a crown hallmark, which helps dated its manufacture after 1945.
Both sugar bowls are footed and gold gilt decorated. When held up to the light, both have a translucent, almost see-through quality, manifesting the

, initially developed in the mid-18

century by English potters, is a type of porcelain containing a minimum of 30% of phosphate derived from animal bone ash. It is known for its high levels of whiteness and translucency, and high mechanical and physical strength and chip resistance. The high strength allows it to be produced in thinner cross-sections.
Measures: Royal Chelsea sugar bowl, 3 ¾” rim diameter x 2 ¼” high x 1 ¾” base diameter; Royal Albert sugar bowl, 3 1/8” rim diameter x 2 1/8” high x 2” base diameter.
Condition: Seemed not used. Very good and clean, with no chips or cracks, may have very mild loss to the gilt gold.
