    THIS IS A VERY LARGE SPECIMEN OF
    MASSIVE SCORODITE WITH NO MATRIX.
    IT IS FROM THE
    300 LEVEL, GOLD HILL MINE, GOLD HILL, CLIFTON DISTRICT, TOOELE CO., UTAH
    .  THE SPECIMEN IS
    APPROXIMATELY 15 X 12 X 6.5 cm
    .  AND IT
    WEIGHS ABOUT 2.5 LBS.
    SCORODITE IS A HYDROUS IRON ARSENATE THAT FORMS FROM THE OXIDATION OF ARSENOPYRITE.  THE SCORODITE IS MASSIVE, FINE GRAINED, CRYSTALLINE.  THE GOLD HILL DEPOSIT IS A POLYMETALLIC DEPOSIT AND IT WAS THE LARGEST KNOWN ARSENIC DEPOSIT IN THE US.  THE MINE WAS OPERATED BY THE WESTERN UTAH COPPER COMPANY DURING THE FIRST QUARTER OF THE 20TH CENTURY.  THE STATE OF UTAH HAS SEALED ALL PORTALS AND THE CURRENT OWNER FORBIDS COLLECTING.
